NUS (under construction)

I feel that it would be useful and meaningful to both readers and myself if I document the (mostly new media) modules I have taken thus far here. “Ctrl-F” a module’s code to go straight to that review (if available). A more comprehensive site containing reviews of modules across tertiary institutions can be accessed from here.

NM3224 Culture Industries

Overview: Yes, this is quite a heavy mod. This mod requires much researches to be done on our own outside of the regular readings in order to pull through the forum posting, mid-term individual paper and final examination. It is a pretty interesting mod with a just as interesting lecturer. A great mod to learn more about both local and foreign culture industries (i.e. how television, film, publishing and other media-related industries operate and therefore leading to the production of certain culture products that are sometimes predictable, yet people still consume them because they are marketed/produced in a certain way, etc). The readings (both assigned and self-sourced) have revealed some surprising information I would otherwise not have known about certain industries.

Workload: For mid-terms, we had to submit a 2,500 words individual essay when some of our coursemates in previous semesters (I’m not sure how many semesters before mine though) could submit theirs as a group. The downside is that it was really taxing on us as on top of other modules’ workload, we had to do much in-depth research into the topic of our choice (coming up with a topic alone is not an easy feat), come up with a topic proposal for our tutor to vet first (don’t worry, this isn’t graded), do up a literature review, introduction, body, conclusion… Mind you, you can’t just rely on the compulsory readings (topics are sparse but related and relevant) the lecturer assigned. You need to take the initiative to research outside of the available materials since (1) you need to have sufficient and strong backing for your topic’s argument/stand and (2) it concerns your grade (like a duh right?).
The awesome thing though, about having to write out an essay from scratch, is that you have a generous pool of examples you can list out in the final examination, especially if one of the three essay questions happens to touch on what you’d already researched for when you did your individual mid-terms essay. You need to be well-prepared on at least four main lecture topics and relevant examples for the final exam. Will do you good to integrate other lecture topics into a single essay too since they are almost always related to one another. They have to be relevant of course.
Final grade takes into account forum posts and class participation as well.
